Third Annual Pawling Human Library

Dear Chamber Members,

We are writing to share an exciting collaboration between the Pawling Schools and the Pawling Public Library and to invite you to participate. The Third Annual Pawling Human Library will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2019. The event is intended to enhance school and community connections to support authentic, real-world learning by engaging educators and the Pawling community in a context in which everyone’s story is valued. By participating, you will get the opportunity to hear stories from other members of the community. You will also have conversations about your own experiences with people who have expressed an interest in your chosen topic.

Human Library events have been held all over the world for the past ten years, most often as collaborations between public and university libraries. For the past two years, our Pawling Human Library has earned rave reviews from everyone involved. Feedback from participants showed that the event impacted their personal and professional lives in lasting ways. The Third Annual Pawling Human Library promises to be even better. We are inviting people from all walks of life to become human books. These human books will become part of a catalogue that Pawling Central School District educators and other members of the Pawling community can “check out” for a 20-minute conversation on the day of the event.

We are writing to you all because you are key figures in the life of Pawling. We want to hear your stories! You may talk about operating a business in town, but bear in mind that this event is not intended as an opportunity to solicit business. You are also encouraged to choose as a topic for your book a hobby, interest, or anything else from your life that you think could lead to engaging conversation. If for any reason you are not able to participate yourself, please consider sharing this invitation with a friend, associate, or colleague who you think may have an interesting story to share.

To become a book, simply complete a very short form, which can be found by going to pcsdhumanlibrary.wordpress.com. On this site, you can also find a list of book titles and descriptions from previous years, if that would be helpful to you in formulating an idea of what you would like to discuss.

Again, Pawling educators and community members want to hear your story. Please consider supporting engaged, relevant and innovative education in Pawling by joining us. We look forward to seeing you on February 19th.

Cordially,
Brian Avery
